Email Marketing Campaign starts over when I add another campaign to contact

I recently wanted to add certain contacts to a second email campaign manually, in addition to an email campaign that they automatically were added to when they filled out a sign-up box.
When I went in and manually added the second campaign, the system restarted the original campaign they were in, meaning they received Step 1 of the original campaign, even though they were already on Step 5 or more. I need the system to recognize that they're already part of one of the campaigns and keep them on the step they are already on.
